Zigu is the tall and intelligent Captain of a vermin crew that sails aboard a ship until she is destroyed in a gale, then he leads his band through Mossflower before allying himself with Swartt. He expertly wields a rapier, claims to have slain his father, and considers himself to be a "gentle beast" though in reality he is a vicious murderer. He secretly plans to take over Swartt's army, only revealing this plan to his bosun Welknose, and leads an attack on Salamandastron. During this he brutally beats unarmed Fordpetal with the flat of his blade, resulting in her death, and is then challenged by an armed Sabretache. The creatures who are fighting momentarily stop to watch the two duel, and Zigu is eventually forced to trickery in hopes of defeating his foe. He becomes trapped against a rock and begs for mercy but Sabretache refuses, questioning why he is pleading for his life when only moments before he slew a defenceless beast, and Zigu is killed.
