Zerig is a sword-wielding Captain in Gulo's horde who originates from the Land of Ice and Snow. He is third-in-command, purposely acts as bait for Driftail's gang so the vermin army can capture them, and survives being pinned to a tree by Tam's dirk during the successful rescue of Armel and Brooky. After Shard's death he is promoted to second-in-command and takes fifty soldiers (half the army) in order to attack Redwall, striking an alliance with Shard's widow Freeta as they plan to conquer the Abbey and lock Gulo outside. He sends Fargil and Graddu to scout the place but the latter is killed by Fortindom and the latter boxed by Wonwill, who sends him crawling back to Zerig with Graddu's body on his back and the warning to not bother attacking. An angry Zerig slays Fargil when he attempts to desert, skinning the fox and using his pelt as a war banner. He is later threatened again by the Long Patrol, as Buckworthy says the hares will meet them on the flatlands for battle. As a decoy he sends only a handful of soldiers while Freeta takes a few others to open a wallgate, but although the vixen manages to enter the Abbey grounds she and her band are all slain by Buckworthy. Zerig and his thirty soldiers are then killed in a trap set behind the wallgate by Fortindom.
