Zaran is a fearsome resident of Mossflower where she lives in a holt with her husband Varon and daughter Namur until they are murdered by the Doomwyte army. After this tragic incident she swears vengeance and spends many seasons digging out the hillside above the cave in hopes of suffocating the birds. She has sable fur, wields a pair of swords that are joined at the hilt, and yells out "Eeeezaranaaaaaa!" when running into battle. At one point she rescues Dubble and, while he and Bisky run to Redwall for reinforcements, stays with a trapped Spingo at the Doomwyte lair. She eventually fulfills her promise when she kills Skurr in the final battle, and afterwards she moves to Redwall where she and Rorgus become mates and parents to Rorzan.
