Vurg is a resident of the North Shores where he lives with his best friend Luke's tribe. He survives the massacre by Daskar's crew and joins Luke aboard Sayna to pursue the corsairs, but they are ambushed by Goreleech while at Twin Islands. He manages to both survive and evade capture (all the others are either slain or taken prisoner onto the vermin ship), grieving while on the island as he thinks his friends have perished. While here he meets Beau and they construct a raft so they can follow Daskar, receiving assistance from Bolwag who gives them bladderwhack to make their raft seaworthy. Upon its completion they are pulled by the sea lion and Kweekum's school until they reach Goreleech, hiding around her side and being pulled in her wake (hence the name of Vurg's story documenting the epic tale, In the Wake of the Red Ship). As Luke is steering the ship back to the North Shores, Vurg helps in stealing food and weapons from the corsairs to give to the oarslaves. He is one of four to survive the crash at Tall Rocks - the others being Beau, Denno, and Dulam respectively - as he is on Goreleech's bow when she is torn apart, and he lives on this half (renamed Arfship by the friends) for many seasons with the other three until they are found by Martin's group. He is the first to see the mouse Warrior, having been found by him sleeping in Luke's old cave. Vurg initially mistakes Martin for his late father, then takes him to Arfship where he tells the story to him and his friends. The four ancient creatures are then brought to Redwall where they stay for the remainder of their seasons.
