Viglat is the obese leader of a small vermin band who live in a dark part within Mossflower. He has one eye, wields a dirk, captures Dreel and Gil, then caught by the Rogue Crew Sea Otters after they rescue the two maids. He is force-fed hotroot soup until he agrees to show them, the GUOSIM, and the Long Patrol to Redwall while carrying a smelly Drogbuk on his back. After a while the two are ordered to be given a much-needed bath due to their horrible body odour, however during the ensuing racket as neither wish to be washed he escapes. He locates Ketral Vane and tells him where the woodlanders are but is forced to run when the fox kills Swiffo with a poison dart and Ruggan gives chase. He does not get very far as the enraged otter slays both him and Ketral.
