Verdauga - derived from "verd" (Latin root for green) and "auge" (German for eye) - is the large Lord of Kotir who originates from the Northlands. He is the son of Mortspear, younger brother of Trunn, father of Gingivere and Tsarmina, father-in-law of Sandingomm, and distant ancestor of Julain. He leads the Thousand Eye Army and happens upon Kotir while in Mossflower with his soldiers, immediately taking control of the ancient place. His various titles include "Master of the Thousand Eyes", "Ruler of Kotir", "Lord of Mossflower", and "Slayer of Enemies". While at Kotir he forces the resident woodlanders to hand over half their food as tax, resulting in many of them to either work more or starve. Despite this he is not extremely cruel towards them and, after they rebel and are defeated, strikes an agreement with them: if they continue to provide his soldiers with food, he will protect them from possibly bigger threats that could arise from the north. This goes on for many seasons, and at one point he drives Luke's family out of Saint Ninian's Church. By the events of Mossflower he is old, suffering from an unknown illness, recognizes Martin as a warrior, and spares the mouse's life by ordering him to "cool his paws" in a Kotir prison cell. He is fatally poisoned by Ashleg (unknown what role, if any, he plays), Fortuanta, and Tsarmina as the latter wants to be Queen. In The Long Patrol it is revealed that he hides a huge amount of treasure somewhere within Kotir, and the goods are found by a group of Redwallers underneath the Abbey's sinking south wall.
