Umfry is the young Abbey Bellringer who holds this title thanks to his large size, and he eventually outgrows his huge grandfather Corksnout. An illiterate creature who snores very loud, he is offered the position of Gatekeeper (thus he moves to the Gatehouse) by Glisam in hopes of letting others sleep. His mistake of not closing the gates one night allows some Doomwyte soldiers to infiltrate the Abbey, and while he is temporarily banished from his post he helps to search for the missing Great Doomwyte Idol jewels as well as participating in a scuffle against the Painted Ones tribe in the tunnels underneath the Abbey. Many seasons after the vermin army have been defeated, he is taught to read and write by a retired Glisam. He eventually becomes Recorder, often using the aliases "Teller of Tales" and "Weaver of Dreams" in his writings.
