Ublaz is the large Emperor of Sampetra Isle who rules from an unnamed palace. He is attractive, physically strong, has black almond-shaped eyes, curled whiskers, lush brown fur with yellow throat and ears, a bushy tail, and mainly wields a silver-bladed dagger with blue sapphires on the handle. His surname is derived from his hypnotic stare, considered to be his most powerful weapon as he uses it to command the monitor lizard army and his pet coral water snake as well as anybeast who attempts to defy him. He possesses immense wealth and has a vast collection of robes and turbans, but his objective is to obtain the Tears of all Oceans so he can place them in the prongs of a crown he refuses to wear until he has the pearls. He is initially a corsair known for being skilled with a blade until he conquers Sampetra upon discovering it. With his lizards and Trident-rat army by his side, he orders that any corsair who wishes to dock their ship in the island pay him booty in exchange for usage of his wood stockpile (this is extremely valuable as no trees grow on the island). He has Conva travel to Mossflower to steal the six pearls but ends up murdering the unlucky stoat after he fails and returns empty-pawed, then has Romca head out with Lask to find the precious objects. In their absence he finds himself under constant attack by first Barranca and then Rasconza, with the latter leading a rebellious army called the Wave Brethren. The two rulers engage in a battle of wits with Rasconza often coming out on top, something that enrages Ublaz and results in him trying numerous tactics to defeat the fox including purposely sabotaging his fleet. He throws a captured Durral into a prison cell when the old Abbot arrives on the island aboard an empty Waveworm, and during the Battle of Sampetra he duels with Martin II inside the palace. He tries to use his hypnotic stare on his opponent but fails as the mouse Warrior is immune to it, and he makes a fatal mistake when he accidentally steps on his pet snake who retaliates by biting him with its venomous fangs. Ublaz dies moments later with Martin II screaming "Holt Lutra!" in his ear and never succeeds in obtaining the pearls. He is one of three pine martens to appear in the series, and the only known member of his species to be a warlord.
