Triggut is an ancient resident of an island in the middle of watermeadows. He is ugly, has a horrible body odour, one good eye, missing half of spikes, and considered to be mentally deranged. He first meets the Althier youngsters after they escape from their cave via a tunnel, promising to help them return to Redwall if they follow him. He takes the group to his island where he snatches up Diggla and threatens to feed him to some pike who live in the watermeadows if they refuse to construct a house for him. The group are forced to start building, and one night Tura attempts to free the mousebabe but realizes Triggut is protected by some toads. They are eventually rescued by the timely arrival of Ambry and Diggs, who capture the insane hedgehog and tie him in a tree so he can watch them escape in his boat. Due to his cruel tendencies, Triggut is a "grey character".
