Tess is a young resident of Saint Ninian's where she lives with her family until they move to Redwall when Cluny arrives in Mossflower. She is the daughter of John and Mrs. Churchmouse, twin sister of Tim, wife of Mattimeo, daughter-in-law of Matthias and Cornflower, and mother of Martin II. Along with her brother she serves as Abbey Bellringer, and together with him and several others she is kidnapped by Slagar's gang. During their terrifying journey to the Kingdom of Malkariss she often keeps Mattimeo in line, sometimes scolding him for his temper, however the two grow close and she plays a big role in their escape attempt at a gorge by stealing Wedgeback's dagger which they use to pick their locks. She notices a large change in Mattimeo's attitude after they hear their parents in the landslide, and along with all the others she is rescued by Matthias's group. She is reunited with her parents, weds Mattimeo, and becomes a mother to Martin II.
