Tergen

Gender: male

Species: goshawk

Appears In: Rakkety Tam

Tergen is a fearsome resident of Mossflower and becomes obsessed with killing vermin after Gulo's soldiers cripple his wing with an arrow. He mistakes Tam for one of them and attacks him, quickly stopping once he realizes the squirrel is actually an ally and slays an ermine who has been secretly following them. After meeting up with the Long Patrol he goes to Redwall with Ferdimond and Yoofus so they can warn the inhabitants about Gulo's presence, and initially he refuses to allow Armel to treat his wing as he thinks she will amputate it. She puts it in a splint and orders him to not fly until it is healed, which results in him becomes somewhat depressed as he feels helpless. Buckworthy, feeling sorry for the bird, assigns him to wall duty as he mentions that a hawk's sharp eyesight might aid them. A grateful Tergen befriends the old hare, hilariously calling him "Brigader Wotwot" (much to Buckworthy's confusion and the amusement of others). This move pays off as Tergen first spots Gulo's approaching horde on two separate occasions, thus allowing the Long Patrol enough time to prepare and set traps. He grieves heavily when Buckworthy is killed in battle, acts as a marshal during the final duel between Gulo and Tam, and travels with the latter to Salamandastron where he decides to stay as a sentry. Along with Krar, Tergen is the only goshawk to appear in the series.
