Tarul is a soldier in the Doomwyte army and the brother of Frang, Murig, and Purz. He participates in a night attack against Redwall in hopes of snatching up a hostage, and when this fails he decides to hide out in the Bell Tower instead of following his fellow birds back into Mossflower. Unfortunately for him he often gets splitting headaches thanks to Umfry ringing the twin bells, but his patience eventually pays off when Furff and Mousebabe sneak into the tower. They attempt to pull the tolling ropes but cannot as they are not strong enough, and Tarul launches himself towards them. Just as he leans forward, Violet suddenly appears and helps the babes with their mission. The twin bells' rims strike Tarul's outstretched head, crushing him instantly. His body falls from the Bell Tower, later thrown into the ditch, and eaten by Baliss.
