This gang of rats is led by Girfang (he and his son Riddig are the only named members) and reside on the streams, using logboats to steal and torment innocent travelers. They are attacked by slingstones from Martin's gang after Riddig comes running to his father, having been struck on his tail from one of the stones and complaining about the friends hurting him. Girfang, who thinks the woodlanders are actually fearsome otters, beats his son for lying. Riddig quickly says the group are indeed otters so that his father will stop hitting him and the rats leave, as Girfang is not interested in fighting them.
