Stiffener is an old resident of Salamandastron and extremely fit, always making sure to exercise every morning. He is an expert boxer, teaching his grandsons Bobweave and Southpaw the art, and one of the few hares to escape the mountain when it is attacked by Trunn's horde. While here he often knocks out vermin to steal their supplies, and he is ordered by Stonepaw to lead the hares to freedom. He later joins the Bark Crew and plays a major role in their success, working with Brog to fight back against the wildcat, as well as conceiving a plan to rescue his friends who are still trapped in the tunnels. With his assistance, the Bark Crew continuously prevents Trunn's soldiers from accessing necessary goods from Salamandastron which eventually causes them to grow thinner and weaker. During the final battle he is reunited with his two grandsons.
