Sollertree - both a play on the word "solitary" and how he mispronounces the word - is a large resident of an unknown place who wields a club and keeps Croikle as a pet. He is the widower of Beechtip, father of Nettlebud, and originally named Skyspike due to his size. Upon returning home from gathering a sapling for their garden he is horrified to discover that Marlfoxes have attacked his family, murdered his wife, and kidnapped his daughter. He spends many seasons searching for the latter but eventually ends up back at his home, so he gives up and lives by himself; during this time he also renames himself Sollertree (also known as Soll). He meets the Four Chieftains while they are passing through his area and, after sending some vermin thieves running, shows the group how to get to the river. He is later reunited with Nettlebud and visits Redwall with her.
