Slipp, Captain

Gender: male

Species: sea rat

Appears In: The Bellmaker

Slipp is a resident of an unknown place and Captain of Pearl Queen, having stealing her from Finnbarr. After getting into an argument with his brother Strapp he is left alone on his ship while his crew heads over to Shalloo for a party, and Finnbarr seizes his opportunity by throwing the corsair into the sea and getting back his vessel. He attempts to swim after Strapp but fails and later washes onto Mossflower's shores with Blaggut, his former boatswain who has also been abandoned. They find Furrtil and Mousebabe who take them to Redwall, and he becomes obsessed with finding some "secret treasure" the Dibbuns had mentioned. He is extremely cruel to a kind Blaggut, often bullying and berating him, and vows revenge against Mellus after she forces him to clean every dish in the Kitchen following a failed cooking attempt. During all this he and Blaggut are haunted by a mysterious black shadow (really a disguised Simeon trying to keep the rats out of trouble), though he refuses to admit he is scared. At one point they sneak away from a group during a singing competition and Blaggut takes him to the spot where the Dibbuns' treasure is as they had previously told him its location. The corsairs discover that it is actually a box filled with toys, and Slipp gets enraged over being tricked. Mellus, Simeon, and the two babes arrive on the scene and Slipp attempts to hurt the latter with a knife, but is stopped when Mellus jumps onto him. He murders the badger by stabbing her in the heart with the weapon, stealing a chalice and dragging Blaggut with him into Mossflower. They do not get very far as Blaggut, grief-stricken over what had just occurred, refuses to move. An angry Slipp viciously beats him and calls him a fool for caring about the Redwallers. Blaggut gets up, renounces the ways of a corsair, and apologizes as he strangles Slipp to death as it is necessary to stop his cruelty.
