Skarlath is a young and fierce resident of the Northlands who ends up trapped in a tree thanks to winter winds. He calls out numerous times and is found by some soldiers from Swartt's horde who are keeping Sunflash (at the time he is called "Scumtripe") captive, so they tie the badger to the tree. He uses his body heat to melt the ice, and they escape into the woodlands where Skarlath names him Sunflash because of his golden headstripe. They become best friends and wander around the land, randomly picking off members from Swartt's horde as they are pursuing the pair. After saving the Lingl and Dubbo families they stay at their cave for some seasons, where he enjoys making cheese with them. He remains loyal to Sunflash, often flying high above the earth to spot any foe while the badger travels to Salamandastron. He gathers much-needed reinforcements when Swartt's horde attacks the mountain, effectively causing the ferret warlord to retreat. After this the two head out to find him, however while hovering over the vermin camp he is spotted by Nightshade who immediately recognizes and kills him with a poison arrow. An enraged Sunflash swiftly avenges his murder when he crushes the vixen, and Skarlath's body is left until Swartt is defeated. He is then buried on a sunny side of Salamandastron, and Sunflash etches a poem upon his grave. Along with Krar, he is the only member of his species to appear in the series.
