Simeon, Brother

Gender: male

Species: mouse

Appears In: Mariel of Redwall, Martin the Warrior, and The Bellmaker

Simeon is an ancient resident of Redwall where he lives with his friends Bernard, Mellus, and Saxtus. Due to unknown reasons he is blind, however his other senses are heightened (particularly smell and hearing) and he often stands on the Abbey battlements or near the gates so he can sense approaching creatures. He is intelligent, acts as a healer and herbalist, and reaches out to others by touching their cheeks, paw, or heart so he can "see" them in his mind. Not long before Dandin leaves with Mariel for Terramort, he is visited by Martin's spirit during the night and the long-dead Warrior guides him to his tomb beneath the Abbey. He places his famous sword in Simeon's paws and guides him to Dandin's bed where he places the weapon next to the youngster, then is brought back to his chair. He often works in the Infirmary where he prepares various poultices with many herbs, aiding Sage and Serena in healing a severely wounded Rosie following the bloody battle against Greypatch's crew. Upon meeting Mariel he instantly recognizes she has a troubled spirit, and when she falls unconscious after Saxtus recites a mysterious poem he gives her a special drink that calms her down so she can tell the Redwallers her tragic past; he also speaks to her in a gentle tone as to not make her more agitated. He later helps Bernard and Mellus in cleaning up Hubert's office so they can find Fieldroan's scrolls, as one of them contains a riddle that will help Mariel on her quest to Terramort. During her absence he does his best to defend his home against Greypatch's crew, sensing their arrival and warning his friends, and thanks to his excellent hearing he is able to determine the location of the rescued oarslaves just prior to them safely reaching Redwall. He becomes good friends with Joseph, helps him to solve the riddle Martin speaks to him in a dream, and suffers a terrible loss when Mellus is killed by Slipp. He recognizes that Blaggut possesses a kind heart and is still alive after Bernard's death, being part of the audience when Aubretia and Bultip travel to the Abbey from Noonvale so they can tell Martin's story. After the epic tale is recounted he is given a sprig of the rose bush that Grumm had planted on Rose's grace, saying that he will plant it in a special place on the Abbey grounds in memory of the heroic mousemaid.
