Shogg is a young slave at Riftgard where he lives with his best friends Triss and Welfo. His place of origin and how long he has been at the fortress is unknown. After it is discovered that he and the two aforementioned maids are stealing wood to construct a vessel they are thrown into a half-submerged prison cell, but they use a file to cut through the bars and escape on a boat built by the other slaves. The trio travel far, meeting both friends and foes along the way while being pursued by Kurda, and he stays with Triss after Welfo decides to remain on Peace Island upon falling in love with Urtica. The two eventually reach Redwall where he befriends Kroova and participates in defending it against Kurda and Plugg's crew. Some time later he joins Triss on the trip to Brockhall where he fights the resident adders, and while he manages to kill Sesstra he saves Triss's life by taking a bite from Zassaliss that is meant for her. He crawls out from Brockhall to warn Triss that Kurda has fled, dying in his friend's arms moments later and buried under a tree at Redwall. A grieving Triss renames the little boat they had escaped Riftgard in Shogg, and she later gives it to Gulif before returning to the fortress and freeing the remaining slaves.
