Shard is a sword-wielding Captain in Gulo's horde who originates from the Land of Ice and Snow. He serves as second-in-command and, along with his mate Freeta, can be quite cunning, with the two believing that they are the real power behind the army and Gulo is nothing more than a "dangerous weapon". His band is responsible for capturing Armel and Brooky, and he steals Martin's sword from the former until Tam rescues the two maids and takes back the sword; in the process Shard is shoved by the squirrel into a fire and suffers severe burns, resulting in him falling slightly out of favour with Gulo. He is later killed by Skipper's javelin, and Freeta blames the wolverine.
