Scurl is a resident of Mossflower whose surname is possibly derived from the fact that newts can purposely shed their tails when threatened so that the predator eats the severed appendage instead of them. Upon meeting Mattimeo's group he claims he has a key that will unlock their chains, but will only give it to them if they hand over some of their personal belongings. When they do, he reveals that he doesn't actually have a key and takes off. The following day he is captured by Matthias's band who recognize their children's items, and he is briefly interrogated by them as to Slagar's whereabouts before fleeing north.
