Sapwood is a resident of Salamandastron and Sergeant in the Long Patrol who wields a lance. He is an expert boxer and heads out with Oxeye to watch Mara and Pikkle, who have deserted the mountain to follow Goffa and Klitch. When he realizes the latter are leading the former into a trap he warns them, distracting the vermin so they can safely escape before returning to his home. He participates in battle against Ferahgo's horde and later joins two others (Oxeye and Pennybright respectively) to spy on a retreating Corpsemakers army. This is actually a planned move by Klitch to gain hostages, and he and Oxeye are captured. They are tied up in the sea but the water eventually loosens their ropes and he escapes on a piece of driftwood. He returns to Salamandastron with much-needed reinforcements during the final battle, and after Urthstripe's death he spots a mysterious word on a copper plate. He knows that the Badger Lord wanted to be buried behind the emllor, and while he cannot read he sees this word on the aforementioned plate he knows what it means ("roll me" backwards); this leads to the finding of the badger treasure.
