Samolus is the ancient Abbey Recorder and good friends with Glisam whose surname comes from the fact that he can fix just about anything. He is the distant descendant of Bryony, Columbine, Dandin, Gonff, and Gonff II, presumed relative of the Gonfelin Thieves, granduncle of Bisky, and great-granduncle of Andio. After finding Columbine's diary and Dinny's writings, he discovers the story of how Gonff steals the Great Doomwyte Idol jewels and encourages Ficaria to speak a rhyme that will help the Redwallers start the search for the missing jewels.
