Salamandastron
Appears In: Every book except Martin the Warrior, The Legend of Luke, The Bellmaker, Redwall, Mattimeo, and Doomwyte
This massive fortress is actually an extinct volcano and located on Mossflower's western shore to protect it from enemies. Its name is derived from "salamander" (a small lizard who reportedly lives in fire) and "astron" (Latin for star), and is often referred to as the mountain of the fire lizard. At some point in time the volcano's interior is transformed into many caverns and hallways, and while its original founder is unknown Brocktree is considered to be the first true ruler as he is responsible for creating the Long Patrol and organizing the mountain's laws. Inside is the cellar, sickbay, larder, meeting chambers, dormitories, dining chamber, the Badger Lord or Lady's living area, armory, cells, nursery, lookout caves, and the forge room. Only badgers are allowed in the last room, and while under the Bloodwrath some will carve their futures into the stone walls in mysterious pictures and words that can only be deciphered by other badgers. During the events of Mossflower a stone carving of a salamander's head can be found inside the mountain, and Boar sometimes moves it to an opening so he can light a fire inside to give off the impression a fearsome dragon is spitting fire; he does this to scare off any corsairs who wander too close. Many badgers feel a mysterious urge to travel here, almost as if they are being pulled by an unseen force, and it is said that two males cannot live here simultaneously. Salamandastron is a magnificent place that has been around long before Redwall's construction and its residents are ancient allies of the Abbey.
