Sagaxus - better known as Sagax - is a young resident of Salamandastron where he lives with his family. He is the sixth great-grandson of Russano (whom he is named after) and Rosalaun, relative of Melanius and Snowstripe, and son of Hightor and Merola. Along with his best friend Scarum he eventually deserts the mountain due to its strict rules, and after meeting up with Kroova they board Stopdog so that any trackers cannot follow them. The trio decide to travel to Redwall as they have heard many stories about the ancient place, running into various friends and foes along the way. At one point they are captured by Plugg's crew who threatens them with death after they burn the boat so he cannot steal it, and Sagax saves his pals and himself when he falsely claims that all their parents are immensely rich. This tricks a greedy Plugg into thinking he can use the trio for ransom, and while on a small ship owned by the corsairs they are rescued by Shogg and Triss who steal the boat. They join the two on the trip to Redwall where he helps defend it against the vermin, and later claims a dead Plugg's battle-axe as he is the only one strong enough to pull it free from the tree in which it is trapped. He accompanies Triss's group to Brockhall where he participates in the ensuing battle, suffering from the Bloodwrath and slaying many foes (including Harssacss) with his new weapon. He comforts Triss when she attempts to push him away following Shogg's untimely death, telling her that he will not leave and plans on joining her when she goes to Riftgard and free the remaining slaves. After killing Vorto and rescuing Scarum in the process, he fulfills his promise when he travels to the fortress and helps defeat Agarnu. He spends a lot of his time at Redwall but often visits his proud parents at Salamandastron, and while it is not specified he presumably succeeds them as ruler.
