Ruskem is an ancient resident of the flatlands who lives by himself in a den alongside a river bank. He is a widower whose children have long since moved, has no teeth, struggles to remember names including his own, wears a blanket cloak, carries a blackthorn stick, skilled at drawing portraits, and keeps fireflies in lanterns. He meets Deyna/Tagg and Nimbalo while they are seeking shelter from rain, allowing them to stay with him for a while.
