Rufe Brush
Gender: male
Species: squirrel
Appears In: Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker
Mentioned In: Martin the Warrior
Rufe is a quiet resident of Redwall and its first official Bellringer. He is good friends with Dandin, Durry, Mariel, and Saxtus, and wields several weapons while participating in defending his home against Greypatch's crew. When the corsairs start launching fire-swingers he alerts his friends by beating on a hollow log, and posts sentries at specific areas around the Abbey where he thinks these missiles will strike. Along with Oak Tom and Treerose he helps to free the oarslaves, leading the freed prisoners to Redwall while Clary's patrol fight Greypatch's crew. He grieves over the deaths of Clary and Thyme, works with some others to find and bring a severely wounded Rosie to safety, and aids in burying the two slain hares in a special spot outside the Abbey grounds. Seasons later he is chosen by Martin to join Joseph on the trip to Southsward, befriending Fatch during the journey after he saves the GUOSIM shrew from drowning, and suffers another loss when the heroic Fatch is killed by Silvamord while saving his life. In his memory he names one of Finnbarr's swords Fatch, and during the Feast of the Bell Raising he is motivated by Martin's spirit to place the famous sword on the weathervane.
