Rockjaw is a huge resident of Salamandastron and member of the Long Patrol who expertly wields a longbow. He is the oldest son of Goodwife Grang, known as "Giant of the North" due to his massive size as well as originating from the Northlands (accompanied by a thick northern accent) very gentle with Dibbuns, and can easily kill vermin with one kick to their neck from his powerful hind legs. He works under Perigord and is responsible for naming a baby Russano by taking Russa's first name and adding on the first two letters of her surname. When a disguised Midge and Tammo infiltrate the Rapscallions camp he acts as their messenger for Redwall, however during their escape he is fatally wounded by Rinkul's spear (the ferret is swiftly killed by Tammo as revenge for both this incident and for Russa's murder). He orders the two hares and a rescued Fourdun to flee, stating he cannot be saved and they must return to the Abbey. Despite his wounds he slays well over a dozen vermin with his longbow arrows before ripping the spear out from his side and running towards the foe. His death is heavily mourned by the Long Patrol, and he later appears alongside other deceased warriors in Russano's dream and tells the infant to remember him when he is an adult. Rockjaw's surname is possibly derived from "grange", the Old English term meaning "farmlands".
