This large vermin army wanders the lands between Mossflower and Salamandastron, and are originally led by Armuk Rinn (the leader is always a sable) who has his headquarters in the Quarry. While their numbers at this time are unknown they are considered dangerous, thus Brang tries to get rid of them. They lay an ambush for him and his Long Patrol hares, however Armuk is killed by Feryn and any surviving vermin soldiers flee. The army vanishes for some time until they reappear when they start kidnapping young woodlanders, and at this point they are led by Vilaya who stations herself at Brockhall (she calls the place Althier, an anagram for "The Lair"). Their head commander is Zwilt who does Vilaya's bidding, though he thinks they should instead attack Redwall. During this time they have about two hundred fighters, some of whom are forced into serving as Zwilt has slain their previous leader. Vilaya wants the kidnapped babes to be used as hostages so she can control all of Mossflower, and is later almost killed by Zwilt in a duel. After being saved by Gliv she returns to the vermin camp and secretly takes back her army, as they are now led by Zwilt who has them attacking the Abbey. He is slain by Clarinna and Vilaya attempts to flee, however she is killed by Ambry. The vermin who are still alive are sent running into Mossflower and are never heard from again.
