Raphael - also known as Rafe - is a tall resident of Salamandastron and Captain in the Long Patrol who wields a long basket-hilted rapier. He is sinewy, has sable fur, a scar from eartip to jaw, and tells Tiria about Cuthbert's tragic past when she arrives at the mountain. Mandoral asks him to choose thirty hares to join the ottermaid on the trip to Green Isle, and while he does not initially choose Portan and Quartle he changes his mind after Tiria challenging his authority has him impressed. Upon reaching the island he commands his troops to prepare their weapons and acts as rearguard during the march towards Felis's fortress. Along with several others he becomes a Council of War member, participates in both fights against the cat army and Pitru's band, and later returns to Salamandastron.
