Pikkle is a young resident of Salamandastron where he lives with his best friend Mara. Like her he is a bit rebellious and joins her in leaving the mountain as they are tired of the strict rules. While out they meet Goffa and Klitch, falling for the latter's charm and bringing them back to Salamandastron. An angry Urthstripe gives the vermin food for one night but demands they leave the following morning, and he and Mara desert. Upon running into the Corpsemakers they realize that Klitch has tricked them and their home is in grave danger, so they head off to find reinforcements. After helping the GUOSSSOM to retrieve the Blackstone as well as finding Loambudd and Urthwyte, he leads the shrews in the Battle of Salamandastron.
