Ovus - presumably derived from ovum, the Latin prefix symbolizing anything to do with eggs - is an ancient resident of an unknown pace and first appears when the three Brockhall adders start terrorizing Mossflower. He flies off to the Northern Mountains to seek out his good friend Bluddbeak who is supposedly an expert at killing adders. However when they return the Redwallers discover Bluddbeak to be half-blind but both birds insist on fighting and, against Apodemus's request, head out to find the snakes. Both birds heroically fight but are killed, and Bluddbeak's body is never recovered. Ovus is buried by the grieving woodlanders in Mossflower.
