Orkwil is a young resident of Redwall and, as an infant, abandoned by his parents at the Abbey gates. He is found and taken in by Granspike who greatly cares for him. As he grows up he starts to show a love for thieving just like his mother and father, "borrowing" various thing from other Redwallers and writing a list in a notebook; whenever he returns one of the items he crosses it out. This grows on the inhabitants' nerves and eventually causes Daucus to banish him for one season, hoping that he will become more appreciative. Initially Orkwil is thrilled about his exile but a day in his food is stolen by a magpie and he ends up in a swamp. He is found by the Sea Raiders and brought aboard Bludgullet where he is tied to the mast beside Gorath, however he helps them to escape thanks to his excellent lock-picking skills and, after Gorath kills Codj in revenge for the murder of his elderly grandparents, they decide to travel to Redwall to warn the residents about Vizka's presence. The Abbeydwellers forgive Orkwil, allow him back inside, and he becomes defense leader when Vizka and the Brownrats attack. He, Maudie, and Rangval are later captured by the corsairs but escape to the Plateau where they participate in the battle there against the vermin. After Vizka's death he becomes Captain of Eulalia!.
