Nutwing - so named because in chickhood the only word he can say is "nut" - is a resident of Redwall and born in the Kitchen. He is the son of Taunoc and Orocca, and brother of Nutbeak and Nutwing. While his siblings fly off in adulthood he decides to stay at the Abbey with his good friend Butty, whom he lives with in the Gatehouse. He wears glasses due to poor eyesight and walks just about everywhere as he appears to dislike flying, though sometimes he will fly very low to get to a different place. During a scuffle against the Marlfoxes he tends to Cregga after she is wounded by some water rat soldiers, and heads back inside the main building to retrieve more supplies. He is surprised when he spots some vermin stealing Martin's tapestry and is killed by Ascrod who then uses the owl's body as a makeshift shield when they escape with the precious piece. His death is grieved by all and the murder is eventually avenged when Cregga kills Ascrod, as the Marlfox is attempting to lead a secret assault. Butty, who cannot sleep due to the absence of Nutwing's snoring as it usually lulled him to rest, is walking around that night and warns his friends upon discovering Ascrod.
