Mortimer is the old and kind Abbot of Redwall who also acts as Infirmary Keeper. He is good friends with Jess, Matthias, and Mr. Squirrel, dislikes fighting, orders his friends to not retaliate against Cluny's horde while the vermin are fleeing, and initially against Matthias's quest to search for Martin's sword. In the final battle he is imprisoned and bravely stands up for his friends when Cluny threatens them, causing the angry Scourge to strike him with his poison tail barb. He manages to survive long enough to name Matthias the Abbey Warrior after he kills Cluny, also asking Mordalfus to succeed him as Abbot before peacefully passing away. He is the only known Abbey ruler to be slain.
