Mokug is an old resident of an unknown place (presumably Riftgard) who serves as Sarengo's personal slave, and favoured by the King because of his golden fur. He is the only slave to join Agarnu and Sarengo on the trip to Mossflower to initially attack Redwall, however the latter decides to investigate Brockhall first as he has heard it holds treasure from badger rulers as well as it and not the Abbey being on the map he is using. After being fatally bitten by Berussca, a dying Sarengo gives him the directions to Brockhall's secret back entrance and the hamster flees into Mossflower where he lives for many seasons until he is found by some Redwallers and invited to live at the Abbey. He assists Triss in her quest and accompanies her on the journey to Riftgard to free the remaining slaves, and after the Pure Ferrets are finally defeated he decides to stay here. He co-leads with Kroova, becomes Freedom's adoptive grandfather, and is the only member of his species to appear in the series.
