Midge - the name of a family of tiny insects - is a short resident of Salamandastron and member of the Long Patrol who works under Perigord. He wields a noose and sling, and gets his surname from the fact that he can easily disguise himself as other creatures. He dresses up as a vermin Seer named "Miggo" and, along with Tammo (who pretends to be a mute vermin named "Burfal the Silent One"), he infiltrates the Rapscallions camp and successfully convinces a superstitious Damug to battle the woodlanders at the Ridge of a Thousand instead of at Redwall; this is because the Abbey's south wall is sinking which leaves it extremely vulnerable to any vermin attacks, and Midge knows that they will have a better chance at winning if they fight the vermin at the ridge. He is skilled at imitating vermin accents, performs magic tricks to wow the soldiers, and helps to rescue a captured Fourdun. The two hares are briefly guarded by Lousewort and Sneezewort but easily flee, and he survives the final battle.
