Mhera, Abbess

Gender: female

Species: otter

Appears In: The Taggerung

Mhera is a young resident of Redwall where she lives with her family. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Deyna, daughter of Rillflag and Filorn, older sister of Deyna/Tagg, and ancestor of Churk, Rumbol, Skipper (Triss), and close friends with Cregga. She suffers a terrible loss when her father and brother go missing while they are out in Mossflower one day, and she does her best to tend to her grieving mother. Cregga - who wishes for the ottermaid to become Abbess, so she starts a plan that she and Song had conceived many seasons ago - shows her and Gundil a small statue of a squirrel carved by Janglur that is actually a bottle containing a riddle. Upon solving it, they are led to a lantern holder column in Great Hall and then to a piece of slate in the wall. This slate takes them to the top of the Bell Tower where they discover a small piece of green cloth that faintly smells of lilac and the word HITTAGALL stitched into it. Mhera works with her friends to solve the other riddles and find the remaining cloths (each has a different word stitched onto it) that had only been placed very recently. She struggles to understand the meanings of the mysterious acronyms until Cregga is fatally shot by Vallug, then before passing away she tells the ottermaid the cloths had been hidden by her and Hoarg and that each acronym stands for a quality a good Abbess should possess (ie. HITTAGALL means "Humility Is The Thing A Good Abbey Leader Learns"). Not long before she and her mother are reunited with Deyna/Tagg, Mhera becomes the only known otter to rule Redwall.
