Methuselah, Brother

Gender: male

Species: mouse

Appears In: Redwall

Mentioned In: Mattimeo

Methuselah is the ancient Abbey Gatekeeper who wears spectacles, has the ability to understand almost any beast, enjoys being alone, writes a book called Ole Methuselah's Index of Bird Ailments and Remedies, and considered to be the oldest mouse who has ever lived at Redwall. He is close friends with Matthias and helps him on his quest to find Martin's sword, working with him to discover a riddle hidden behind the tapestry, and later helps to repair the piece after it is taken back from Cluny. While finishing his work he spots Chickenhound bolting through Great Hall carrying a bag of stolen items, however when he bravely attempts to stop him he is killed when the young fox whacks him over the head with the bag harder than intended. His spirit appears in Matthias's dream, encouraging him to continue his search for the sword. In Mattimeo it is revealed that he was able to decipher Loamscript and, along with Mortimer, calls ants "little folk"; this important discovery assists the Redwallers in solving a riddle that leads that to a statue of Germaine and thus aid Matthias on his quest to pursue Slagar and the kidnapped youngsters. In the Bible, Methuselah is an old wise man who lives far longer than any other person.
