Melemse - derived from "meles", the Latin root for badger - is the older Lady of Salamandastron who has ruled for over twenty-seven seasons. She wears a tunic and apron, still quite powerful despite her age, and makes a drum for Redwall after the twin bells are temporarily taken down for cleaning. This drum is stolen by Gulo's horde who also kill the hares carrying it, and it is unknown whether the drum is ever found. In revenge for the brutal murders of her Long Patrol fighters, she sends out Buckworthy and one hundred hares to kill Gulo and his horde.
