Meldrum is an old and overweight resident of presumably Southsward who wields a fishing line with a large rock tied to its end. He is the relative of Lorquin and Tarquin, grand-nephew of Bracken, uncle of Coltvine, Foghill, Runtwold, and Thurdale, wears a cocked hat, and gives himself a medal every time he slays a vermin. While wandering around Southsward he happens upon Dandin and Mariel being threatened by some of Nagru's soldiers, killing Bragglin and causing the rats to flee. He is responsible for staring the landslide that kills the Dirgecallers but, along with Dandin and Mariel, captured by Nagru and thrown into a Floret prison cell. They escape, free Gael, meet Glokkpod, and climb to the castle's highest tower to escape from the attacking rat soldiers. Glokkpod is injured by the vermin so to encourage him to fly to safety, Meldrum hurls insults at him. This enrages the shrike and he flies up to kill him, being held back by the others. He tries this trick again not long after but it fails when Glokkpod refuses to help and heads off, warning the hare that if they ever meet he will slay him. He participates in the Battle of Southsward and later visits Redwall.
