Matthias Methuselah Mortimer - better known as Mattimeo - is a young resident of Redwall where he lives with his family. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Fieldmouse, son of Matthias and Cornflower, husband of Tess, son-in-law of John and Mrs. Churchmouse, brother-in-law of Tim, and father of Martin II. He is born during the Summer of the Talking Squirrel, four seasons after the Late Rose Summer Wars, and viewed at as being quite spoiled which is something that worries the other Redwallers because they believe he will succeed his father as Abbey Warrior. He is immediately suspicious of Vitch, often gets into arguments with him, and along with several others kidnapped by Slagar - who specifically targets him because he blames Matthias for his horrific injuries as well as his mother Sela's death. He is chained with his friends and forced to march south, initially unaware that his father and some others are in pursuit. He later learns of Slagar's true identity when the masked fox shows him his wounds and tells him the story of how the Redwallers "enslaved" him in the Infirmary. Mattimeo attempts to tell Slagar the truth but to no avail, and Sam (who was the only one alive at the time of Slagar's injuries) later tells him and the others what actually happened. During the grueling journey he is constantly tormented by Vitch and often gets annoyed over Cynthia's whining, but eventually grows into a mature mouse. At one point he leads an escape attempt via a river, however the youngsters are recaptured by Slagar who then has their parents buried alive in a cave and continues on. He boldly threatens the masked fox and receives a brutal beating but refuses to bow down, resulting in Slagar secretly fearing him. After a long time of traveling the slaves eventually end up in the Kingdom of Malkariss where they are thrown into a cell after telling Nadaz they will not surrender, but later freed by the GUOSIM and a dying Log a Log. He is reunited with Matthias during the Battle of Malkariss, and after Slagar's death he and all the rescued youngsters return to Redwall. He marries Tess, becomes a father to Martin II, succeeds his father as Abbey Warrior, later passes away from old age, and appears alongside other deceased warriors in a baby Russano's dream.
