Mariel Gullwhacker

Gender: female

Species: mouse

Appears In: Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker

Mentioned In: Martin the Warrior and The Long Patrol

Mariel - based off of Jade, Mr. Jacques' granddaughter - is a young resident of somewhere in the far south where she lives with her father Joseph (her mother is never mentioned). While sailing towards Salamandastron aboard Periwinkle to deliver the Joseph Bell to Rawnblade, they are viciously attacked by some of Gabool's corsairs who take her and her father prisoner. They are forced to serve Gabool as his personal slaves until he throws her into the sea during a wicked storm, however she survives and washes ashore with her body being tied to a thick piece of knotted rope. She uses this rope to fight off some hungry gulls, names the rope her Gullwhacker, and as she is suffering from amnesia she calls herself "Storm Gullwhacker". After being attacked by Oykamon's toads she is rescued by Clary's patrol who give her a medal for her bravery and hand her off to Pakatugg in hopes of him taking her to Redwall, but the paranoid squirrel does not trust her and she ends up leaving. She meets Tarquin and they travel to the Abbey where she hears a mysterious poem recited by Saxtus during a feast and falls unconscious, later telling her tragic story to some Redwallers under guidance from Simeon and thus regaining her memory. After recovering she goes with Dandin, Durry, and Tarquin to Terramort as she is determined to kill Gabool, meeting up with Rawnblade during the trip and eventually arriving at the corsair island where she is reunited with Joseph. They all participate in the Battle of Terramort but do not fulfill their promise as the King is killed by his pet scorpion, and not long after she heads off with Dandin in search of adventures. They end up in Southsward where they are captured by Nagru but escape with Glokkpod and Meldrum, and she helps in defeating the evil Foxwolf. Along with Dandin and Durry she sails off on Pearl Queen, and her fate is unknown. Innumerable seasons later her spirit appears alongside other deceased warriors in a baby Russano's dream.
