Laterose of Noonvale
(Rose)
Gender: female
Species: mouse
Appears In: Martin the Warrior
Laterose - commonly known as Rose - is a young and beautiful resident of Noonvale where she lives with her family. She is the daughter of Urran Voh and Aryah, older sister of Brome, and grand-aunt of Aubretia. She is known for her singing voice as well as being an expert imitator. After Brome runs away from home following another fight with their father, she and her best friend Grumm leave to find him. They eventually end up at Marshank and it is here where she first meets Martin, tied up between two poles during a wicked storm. Inspired by his courage and outraged at Badrang's cruel, she and Grumm fend off the hungry gulls the next morning by throwing stones at them before she imitates the sound of an eagle to drive them off. She communicates with Keyla via song to receive directions on how to dig into the Prison Pit as this is where Brome, Felldoh, and Martin have been thrown into, and upon seeing each other close-up she and Martin fall in love. The five become separated during a fierce storm and she, Grumm, and Martin decide to head to Noonvale to gather reinforcements (meanwhile, Brome and Felldoh meet the Rambling Rosehip Players who devise a daring scheme to rescue the rest of the Marshank slaves). They meet Pallum along the way as well as other various friends and foes, such as Boldred and the vicious Gawtrybe. With help from the former and the Broadstream Otters, the trio eventually arrive at Noonvale where she helps the inhabitants to understand how important their support is in the fight against Badrang. Urran Voh, however, initially disagrees with his daughter not only loving Martin but also joining him in the battle as he worries she will get hurt, but she says she feels safe with him. They manage to gather help after Urran Voh reluctantly agrees, and Boldred finds even more assistance. Together with her friends and love, she participates in the Battle of Marshank where she bravely protects Grumm from being killed by Badrang when she leaps onto the Tyrant and immediately starts hitting him hard with her loaded sling. An enraged Badrang grabs and throws her away, causing her to strike her head against the wall and suffer an instantly fatal concussion. In the television series she is briefly captured by the stoat Tyrant who threatens her in front of Martin but she bites him on the arm which causes him to drop the sword he is holding; Badrang then recovers the sword and appears to stab her (this is off-screen) in the heart or neck region. Her death is grieved heavily by all, particularly Martin, and she is buried at Noonvale with a red rose on her grave planted by Grumm. As this rose blooms later than others it is called the Late Rose in her memory, and many seasons later Aubretia and Bultip bring a sprig of this plant to Redwall; Simeon plants it in a special spot on the Abbey grounds. During the Late Rose Summer Wars, when Cluny steals the tapestry picture of Martin, the buds wilt but eventually return when the piece is brought back to its rightful place. Rose's death is considered to be one of the most tragic in the series.
