Kroova is a young orphaned resident of an unknown place who does not remember his parents and sails aboard Stopdog (so named because when he steals the ship from three Ratguard soldiers they yell "Stop, dog!"). He is the husband of Sleeve, adoptive father of Freedom, and presumed ancestor of the Wavedog clan from Green Isle. He is intelligent, resourceful, a bit of a rebel, and friends with Sagax and Scarum. After the latter two flee Salamandastron due to its strict rules, the trio initially decide to sail to Redwall but eventually find themselves entangled in the ongoing struggle between Kurda and Triss. He befriends Shogg, grieves heavily when he is killed during battle at Brockhall, and joins Triss on the trip to Riftgard to free the remaining slaves. While participating in the fight he rescues Sleeve from being slain by Hydrad, and together they adopt Freedom who is not claimed by anybeast. He decides to stay at a newly-liberated Riftgard with his family.
