Ketral is the tall, slim, and sinewy leader of a vermin gang (made up of foxes, snakes, toads, and other species) who reside in a dark region of Mossflower. He wields a crossbow, calls himself "Lord of the Hinterwoods", and mercilessly kills those he views as trespassers. His band ambushes Posy, Uggo, and the GUOSIM when they are traveling through the forest, ordering them to leave immediately. The two young hedgehogs question his authority and he announces their execution, however he is stopped by the timely arrival of the Long Patrol and Rogue Crew Sea Otters who force him and his gang to run off. He ends up secretly following the group and is spotted by Dandy, though too late as he kills Swiffo with a poison dart. He is immediately pursued by Ruggan but does not get very far and is decapitated by the enraged otter.
