Joseph is a resident of presumably the far south where he lives with his daughter Mariel (his wife is never mentioned). He is an expert bellmaker and creator of the Joseph Bell, traveling aboard Periwinkle to deliver it to Rawnblade. Along the way his crew is attacked by some of Gabool's corsairs, and along with the bell he and Mariel are taken prisoner. Quite some time later he is thrown into the sea by Gabool but survives and founds the Terramort Resistance Against Gabool, or TRAG, with Tan Loc. Completely unaware that his daughter is actually live, he lives in Terramort's tunnels and leads a group of about twenty mice in commandeering Seatalon and kills Catseyes. Shortly before the final battle he and Mariel reunite, and together they help to defeat Gabool. He later moves with her to Redwall where he stays for many seasons until Martin appears to him in a dream, encouraging him to travel to Southsward so he can rescue his daughter and Dandin from Nagru's evil reign. He teams up with Finnbarr, sails to the land aboard Pearl Queen, and decides to stay so he can help with repairs. Gael later gives him the titles "King's Adviser", "Honorary Commander to the Army of Southsward", and "Lord Warden of Castle Floret".
