Jess is a resident of Mossflower where she lives with her family until they move to Redwall not long after Cluny's army arrives in the region. She is the wife of Mr. Squirrel, mother of Sam, and adoptive mother of Elmtail. Like all squirrels she is an expert climber and heads to the Roof to search the weathervane for Martin's sword as Matthias believes it is there, however she is attacked by the Sparra and forced to retreat; she then tells Matthias that it appears as if the sword used to be there at one point but no longer is. She and Basil later conceive a daring plan to get back Martin's stolen tapestry from Cluny, traveling to Saint Ninian's where they work together to trick the Scourge despite his attempts to offer her a place in his army before threatening her family. Seasons after participating in the final battle she suffers a terrible loss when her son is kidnapped by Slagar's gang, thus she joins Matthias in the pursuit during which she once again shows off her fighting skills. All the young ones are eventually rescued and returned to Redwall, where she adopts Elmtail into her family.
