Hugo is the overweight Abbey Friar who often holds a fan in his tail so he can cool himself from the Kitchen heat, and is considered to be one of Redwall's best cooks. He attempts to pursue Chickenhound after he catches the young fox stealing some items, but stops out of shock when he witnesses Methuselah's murder. In the final battle he is captured by Cluny while hiding in the Bell Tower but rescued when Matthias cuts the ropes holding up the Joseph Bell, crushing Cluny to death. He receives assistance from Pansy and eventually names her his successor, though he helps out in the Kitchen whenever possible. Along with John and Lettie he is the only Redwaller not drugged when Slagar's gang puts on a "performance" at Redwall, as they were not at the tables and thus did not drink the laced beverages. While trying to pursue the fox's gang after they kidnap some youngsters he is killed by them, and Basil discovers his body a short while later. His death, along with that of Lettie's, is eventually avenged by Matthias and Orlando.
