Hortwill - better known as Horty - is a young resident of the Northern Mountains where he lives with his family in a hare colony. He is the grandson of Grandmother Braebuck and older brother of Martha. Along with them he is the sole survivor of a horrific vermin attack on their home in his Dibbunhood, and the trio manage to flee. They eventually arrive at Redwall where the elder dies from exhaustion and Martha mysteriously loses the ability to walk, thus confining her to a wheelchair. He loves food, and can be a little disobedient, and secretly leaves with his best friends Fenna and Springald to surprise Bragoon and Saro during the expedition to Loamhedge's ancient remains as the older two are traveling here to find a supposed cure for Martha's paralysis. During the Battle in the Abyss he is given Martin's sword by Bragoon who then orders him to take the two maids and leave, and he does so reluctantly. During the journey back he slightly injures himself with the famous weapon while showing off to some GUORAF shrews, so Fenna carries the sword the rest of the way. As a result she becomes Abbess, as Martin had previously told Carrul that whomever has his sword upon their return would be the next ruler. He later leaves for Salamandastron with Lonna, claims Bol's scimiar as his own, grows up to become a well-respected Captain in the Long Patrol, and often visits his sister (who is proud to see how much he has matured) at the Abbey.
